About the Book
Umoja, a friendly 12-year old girl, embarks on a journey to visit her grandmother in the land of Nguzo Saba. However, she is met with unexpected troubles, which bring her new friends to help solve them.
As they travel through unfamiliar terrain, they experience adventure that includes suspense, joy, and wonder. Upon each stop, they learn a Kwanzaa principle. Join Umoja and her friends to learn the importance of community and determination.
Phyllis and LaTricia met in 2013. They found they shared some things in common including a love of culture, a love of learning and a heart for creativity. In 2020, they teamed up to write their first children’s book, The Journey to Nguzo Saba.
Phyllis is originally from Mississippi. While in elementary school, she developed a love for writing because it allowed her to escape boredom by using her imagination. Her joy from writing comes from educating readers and giving them a stronger sense of self.
LaTricia was born and raised on the west coast. She currently lives in the southeast. She enjoys reading and has a passion for books. Her hope is that children of all ages find joy and pleasure in reading.
